Manly Early Learning Centre
Project Name: Manly Early Learning Centre
Awards: NSW Architecture Awards 2021 Shortlist for Educational Architecture
Top 40 in Think Brick Australia's Horbury Hunt Commercial Award 2021
Completed: January 2020
Value: Approximately $12 million
Milton Architects was appointed to design an early learning centre in Manly to become a part of the fabric of community life and a treasured building in the area.
What was the project brief for Milton Architects?
We were commissioned to design an early learning centre that was not only world-class, but also reflected both the building's surrounds and the Manly community.
How did Milton Architects answer the brief?
We worked closely with our client to design an early learning centre appropriate to its location. The building was designed to fit within the residential context of the suburb and to respond to the local climate of the northern beaches, innate in the culture and architectural vernacular of the area.
The exterior walls were broken into different segments to reduce the overall scale, responding to local streetscape. Additionally, we included architectural screening devices to blend the building exterior into the surroundings.
Careful consideration was given to the adjoining heritage building and nearby foundation houses as part of the planning process. We consulted with several heritage architects in developing the final design solution. The selection of materials used also reflects the nearby federation houses e.g. the building includes use of Bowral face bricks, Australia's oldest brickwork, to conform to the surrounding look.
